Our Life Ring Stations

Find Goal Zero life ring stations across Indiana.

Goal Zero: Indiana Drowning Prevention places publicly accessible life ring stations near retention ponds, parks, neighborhoods, public access areas, and other water hazards where emergency rescue equipment may help save a life before first responders arrive.

Drowning can happen quickly and often silently. The CDC reports that drowning is a leading cause of death for children, and more than 4,000 unintentional drowning deaths occur in the United States each year. Our Life Ring Station Initiative is one part of a larger drowning prevention effort focused on education, prevention, outreach, and access to lifesaving equipment.

Important: Life ring stations are for emergency use only. If someone is in distress, call 911 immediately.

What Is a Life Ring Station?

A life ring station is a dedicated emergency rescue equipment location placed near a body of water. Each station is designed to provide quick access to a throwable flotation device during a water emergency.

A typical Goal Zero station includes:

  • A commercial-grade life ring
  • Weather-resistant cabinet or mounting system
  • Rope or throw line when appropriate
  • Emergency instructions
  • Donor or sponsor recognition
  • Location tracking for inspection and maintenance

These stations are not a replacement for supervision, swim lessons, fencing, life jackets, or calling 911. They are an added layer of protection when seconds matter.

Why Life Ring Stations Matter

Many water emergencies happen before professional rescuers can arrive. A properly placed life ring station gives bystanders a safer option than entering the water themselves.

Goal Zero supports the principle:

Reach or throw. Don’t go.

In a drowning emergency, entering the water can place the rescuer in danger too. A life ring allows a bystander to throw flotation support from shore while emergency responders are on the way.

Where We Place Stations

Goal Zero works with community partners, neighborhoods, property managers, parks, businesses, and public safety agencies to identify high-risk locations across Indiana.

Priority locations may include:

  • Retention ponds
  • Neighborhood ponds
  • Parks and trails near water
  • Public fishing areas
  • Apartment and HOA water features
  • Community lakes
  • Areas with prior water-related incidents
  • Locations with limited existing rescue equipment
